Gold and Silver Price Forecast Today, 20 October 2026: When Should You Move Your Stop Loss To Break Even?
This gold and silver price forecast today starts with the question every trader asks the moment a trade goes their way: when should you move your stop to break even?
Move it too early, and an ordinary bounce takes you out at entry, right before the move you were waiting for. Move it too late, or never, and a trade that was working turns into a full loss.
Today’s board answers it on two metals at once. Six targets were reached overnight, every timeframe on gold and silver points DOWN, and three tickets now have their trailing stop sitting in front of the entry. One of them is the silver 4 hour sell from a week ago.
When should you move your stop to break even? When the market’s structure has moved past your entry, not at a fixed number of pips and not the moment you feel nervous. A stop moved to entry before structure supports it sits inside normal price noise and gets reached by ordinary bounces. On the Direction Sniper panel, the trailing stop level follows structure, so the moment it crosses in front of your entry is the moment break even is earned.

Six targets reached overnight. Both metals read SELL, and the status line on both reads Sell on M15, M30, H1, H4.
1. Two Ways Traders Get Break Even Wrong
Trap one: too early, or too tight. The trade moves a little in your favour, it feels good, and you drag the stop to entry, or to the first target, to feel safe. But price does not move in a straight line. A normal bounce comes back, reaches your stop, and closes the trade. Then the move continues without you.
Trap two: too late, or never. The trade runs well in your favour and you leave the original stop where it was, hoping for more. Then the market turns, and a trade that was clearly working ends at a full loss.
Both traps have the same cause. The stop is being moved by feeling, not by the market. The fix is to let structure decide, and that is exactly what today’s board shows.
2. Silver: A Week Old Sell, Now Protected

Regular readers know this ticket. The silver 4 hour sell printed on 13 October at 20:00:
- Entry 59.161
- Original stop 61.286, so 2.125 of risk
- Target 1 at 57.036, reached on 14 October
- Target 2 at 54.910 and Target 3 at 52.785, still ahead
On 15 October we wrote that its trailing stop sat at 61.078, still above the entry, and that the plan was in its first phase. Since then silver has rallied twice, to around 57.9 on 16 October and again on 19 October. The verdict never flipped.
Today the trailing stop sits at 58.015. That is 1.146 in front of the entry, and 3.271 tighter than where it started, more than the whole original risk.
Now look at trap one. A trader who moved their stop to Target 1 at 57.036 the moment it was reached would have been taken out by the very first of those rallies. The panel’s trailing stop stayed above the structure, both rallies stayed below it, and the ticket is still running a week later.
That is break even done by structure. It needed a week, two rallies and no guessing.
3. Gold: Two Targets Reached, And The Stop Is Further Ahead Than The Original Risk

The gold 30 minute sell printed on 19 October at 12:30:
- Entry 4168.79
- Original stop 4188.77, so 19.98 of risk
- Target 1 at 4148.81, reached
- Target 2 at 4128.82, reached
- Target 3 at 4108.84, about 17 below price
The trailing stop now sits at 4147.19, which is 21.60 in front of the entry. That is further in front than the 19.98 the ticket risked when it opened. The level has tightened by 41.58 since the ticket printed, more than twice the original risk.
This is trap two avoided. A trader who left the stop at 4188.77 would have a ticket that could still close at a full loss on one sharp rally. The trail followed the structure down, so that is no longer possible.
4. Silver’s Fast Charts: Four Targets Overnight

On the silver 30 minute, the sell from 19 October at 17:00 (entry 57.300, original stop 57.708, 0.408 of risk) reached Target 1 at 56.892 and Target 2 at 56.483. Its trailing stop at 57.327 has already removed 93 percent of the original risk and sits only 0.027 behind the entry.

On the silver 15 minute, the sell from 19 October at 23:00 (entry 57.098, original stop 57.376, 0.278 of risk) reached Target 1 at 56.820 and Target 2 at 56.541. Its trailing stop at 57.040 is 0.058 in front of the entry. Price sits only about 0.10 below that level, so if the next bounce reaches it, the ticket closes in front of its entry after two targets.
And on the silver 1 hour, a fresh sell printed on 19 October at 18:00: entry 57.116, targets 56.340, 55.564 and 54.788. Its trailing stop at 57.499 has already tightened by 0.393, about half the original risk of 0.776, and price is about 28 percent of the way to Target 1.
Every silver timeframe, M15 to D1, reads DOWN.
5. The Two Gold Tickets That Closed Early

We publish every ticket, including the ones that close before their targets.
On 19 October a single bounce reached up to two gold trailing stops:
- The gold 1 hour sell from 4161.75 closed at its trailing stop of 4186.37, which is 24.62 behind its entry.
- The gold 15 minute sell from 4172.97 closed at its trailing stop of 4177.15, which is 4.18 behind its entry.
Here is what matters. Neither chart turned UP. The bounce reached the trailing stops, but it did not turn either chart. Gold then fell to around 4,116, below the levels where both tickets had their first target, and the 15 minute below all three.
And look at how much the trail had already done on the 15 minute. The original risk was 16.35. The trail had tightened by 12.17 before the bounce, so the ticket closed 4.18 behind entry instead of 16.35. The trailing stop made that loss about three quarters smaller.
That is the honest side of break even. The trail does not promise every ticket reaches a target. It makes sure the ones that do not cost as little as the structure allows, and it keeps the direction intact for the next ticket.

6. Gold’s Fresh 4 Hour Sell

Last night at 20:00, gold printed a fresh 4 hour sell:
- Entry 4141.05
- Stop loss 4190.00, so 48.95 of risk
- Target 1 at 4092.10, Target 2 at 4043.15, Target 3 at 3994.20
Gold sits at about 4,126, roughly 15 in favour and close to 30 percent of the way to Target 1. The label still reads STOP LOSS, because this ticket is in its first phase. If it follows the silver 4 hour, the label will change to TRAILING STOP as structure develops, and you will see the exact moment it crosses break even.
Gold spent the first half of October trading sideways between roughly 4,080 and 4,225. Now the 4 hour and the daily both read DOWN, and all three entry charts agree.
7. The Lesson: Move Your Stop When Structure Moves, Not When You Feel Nervous
Today’s board shows the whole rule on two metals:
- Early in a trade, leave the stop where structure says. The silver 4 hour stayed above both rallies because its stop was not dragged in on feeling.
- As structure moves, the stop follows. The gold 30 minute trail is now further in front of its entry than the trade ever risked.
- Break even is earned, not chosen. It arrives when the trailing stop crosses your entry, which on today’s board has happened on three tickets.
If you want the full method with five real panels, read our guide on when to move stop loss to break even.
The hard part is watching structure on five timeframes and two metals at once. The Direction Sniper panel does it for you, and the label tells you in words: STOP LOSS while the trade is new, TRAILING STOP once it starts to tighten.
8. How Much To Risk Per Trade
We risk at most 2 percent of the account on any single trade, and usually 0.5 percent. On a 10,000 dollar account, 0.5 percent is 50 dollars.
Gold is 100 ounces per standard lot, so a 1 dollar move is 100 dollars per lot. Silver is 5,000 ounces per standard lot, so a 1 dollar move is 5,000 dollars per lot. At 50 dollars of risk:
- Gold H4, 48.95 of risk: 4,895 dollars per lot, so about 0.01 lot
- Silver H1, 0.776 of risk: 3,880 dollars per lot, so about 0.013 lot
- Silver M15, 0.278 of risk: 1,390 dollars per lot, so about 0.036 lot
If you are worrying about every trade, your lot size is still too big. Small risk is what lets you leave a trail alone long enough to do its job.
Small account? On a 1,000 dollar account, 0.5 percent is 5 dollars, and the gold 4 hour would need about 0.001 lot, below the usual 0.01 minimum. A cent account fixes it, because lot sizes work in hundredths of a standard lot. We recommend a RoboForex Cent account or an XM Micro account.

Why We Publish This
Every read on this site comes straight from the Direction Sniper panel. We publish the entry, the stop and the targets as the panel shows them, including the two gold tickets that closed early this time. You can check every number against the chart yourself.
Disclosure: the silver screenshots show my own live order, a sell of 0.01 lots at 57.128. It is a personal position, shown for transparency, and not a recommendation.
Know Exactly When Your Trade Is Protected
The Direction Sniper Gold and Silver Edition puts this exact panel on your own gold and silver charts.
- Direction. One verdict from the 4 hour and the daily. Today both metals read SELL on every timeframe.
- Rallies that have not broken structure. Silver rallied twice this week and the panel held SELL. The week old 4 hour ticket is still running.
- The stop loss. Every ticket prints its stop before you enter, and the trailing stop shows the moment break even is earned, like three tickets on today’s board.
One panel. Five timeframes. No more guessing when to move your stop.
$47 on MT4, $67 on MT5, rising in March 2027.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should you move your stop to break even?
Move it when the market’s structure has moved past your entry, not at a fixed number of pips and not the moment you feel nervous.
A stop moved to entry before structure supports it sits inside normal price noise and gets reached by ordinary bounces.
On the Direction Sniper panel, the trailing stop level follows structure, so the moment it crosses in front of your entry is the moment break even is earned.
What happens if you move your stop to break even too early?
An ordinary bounce comes back, reaches your stop, and closes the trade, often right before the move you were waiting for.
On 20 October 2026, a trader who moved the silver 4 hour stop to Target 1 at 57.036 would have been taken out by the rally to around 57.9.
The panel’s trailing stop stayed above both rallies, and the ticket was still running a week after it printed.
What happens if you never move your stop?
A trade that was clearly working can still end at a full loss when the market turns.
The gold 30 minute ticket from 4168.79 had an original stop of 4188.77, so 19.98 of risk.
Its trailing stop followed the structure down to 4147.19, which is 21.60 in front of the entry, further than the trade ever risked.
What is the gold and silver price forecast today, 20 October 2026?
Every timeframe on both metals reads DOWN on the Direction Sniper panel, so both verdicts are SELL.
Six targets were reached overnight, four on silver and two on gold, and three tickets have their trailing stop in front of entry.
Gold printed a fresh 4 hour sell at 4141.05 with Target 1 at 4092.10, and the silver 4 hour has Target 2 at 54.910 as the next level to watch.
Why did two gold tickets close if the direction was right?
On 19 October a single bounce reached the trailing stops on the gold 1 hour and 15 minute tickets, and both closed.
Neither chart turned UP, and gold then fell to around 4,116.
The 15 minute trail had already tightened by 12.17, so that ticket closed 4.18 behind entry instead of 16.35, about three quarters smaller than the original risk.
How much should you risk per trade on gold and silver?
We risk at most 2 percent of the account on a single trade, and usually 0.5 percent.
On a 10,000 dollar account, 0.5 percent is 50 dollars, which on today’s gold 4 hour stop of 48.95 is about 0.01 lot.
If the correct size falls below your broker’s 0.01 minimum, a cent account solves it, because lot sizes work in hundredths of a standard lot.
Does a reached target mean a trader made money?
No. Price reaching a published target level is not the same as a realised result.
Fills, spreads, lot size and when each trader closed the position all change the outcome.
