Gold Forecast Today, 7 October 2026: My Four Hour Trade Was Stopped Out. Here Is What It Cost.
Executive Summary
On Monday we published a gold post describing a four hour sell position that was still open. We said where its stop sat and we said it was 30 percent of the way through its own risk.
This morning it closed.
It did not reach a single target. It went the wrong way and it was stopped out.
It cost 44.18 points. The stop it was placed with was 80.79 points.
That is the whole post. Everything below is the arithmetic, why the loss was 45 percent smaller than the risk taken, why the verdict never changed while the trade was dying, and the three tickets that replaced it this morning with a fraction of the risk.
Gold is trading at 4140.20.
| Chart | Entry | Risk | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| H4 | 4131.38, 5 Oct 08:00 | 80.79 | Closed at trailing stop 4175.56. Cost 44.18 |
| H1 | 4147.31, 05:00 today | 28.99 | Open, 7.11 ahead |
| M30 | 4156.23, 04:00 today | 18.86 | Open, first target level reached |
| M15 | 4160.19, 03:30 today | 9.36 | Open, Target 1 and Target 2 reached |
A losing trade and a recovery, on the same chart, in the same session.
1. The Trade That Died

Here is the ticket in full.
Sell. Entry 4131.38 on 5 October at 08:00. Stop loss 4212.17. Targets 4050.59, 3969.80 and 3889.01.
Entry to stop is 80.79 points. That was the risk on the day it was taken, and that number is where the lot size comes from.
Over the next two days price went up instead of down. The trade never reached its first target. By this morning it was closed.
The level it closed at was not 4212.17. It was 4175.56.
| Points | On 0.01 lots | |
|---|---|---|
| Risk when the trade was taken | 80.79 | $80.79 |
| What it actually cost | 44.18 | $44.18 |
| Difference | 36.61 | $36.61 |
A 45 percent smaller loss on a trade that reached nothing.
Not because the trade worked. It did not work. Because the stop level had walked down with the chart for two days before price came back for it.
What the tool does for you here: the panel recalculates the trailing stop as structure tightens and changes its label from STOP LOSS to TRAILING STOP once it has started moving. You can see the level on the chart the whole time. What it does not do is move the order for you. The arithmetic is handled. The click is yours, and a level you can see but have not acted on is still your original 80.79.
2. Why The Verdict Never Changed
Price rose from 4131 to above 4175. That is enough to close a position. It was not enough to change the direction.
The daily and the four hour both read DOWN through the whole move. The verdict stayed SELL. And this morning every shorter chart agreed: sell on the fifteen minute, sell on the thirty minute, sell on the one hour, sell on the four hour.
So the move that killed the trade was a rally inside a downtrend that had not broken structure. It took out a position without changing anything above it.
This is the distinction almost nobody draws, and it is where most of the damage gets done. A trader watching that rally had two choices. Decide the trend had turned and start buying. Or decide the trend had not turned, take the loss on the old ticket, and keep looking for sells.
The second one was correct. Price is 4140.20 now, still below where that rally topped out.
What the tool does for you here: direction is settled on the daily and the four hour, and no shorter chart is allowed to overrule it. A rally that has not broken structure does not get to flip your bias just because it is uncomfortable to watch. That is the difference between losing one position and reversing into the wrong side of the market.
3. What Replaced It

Three new tickets this morning, all sells, all in the same direction as the one that just died.
M15. Sell at 4160.19 at 03:30, risk 9.36 points. Target 1 at 4150.83 reached. Target 2 at 4141.48 reached. Target 3 sits at 4132.12.
M30. Sell at 4156.23 at 04:00, risk 18.86 points. Price has traded to 4133.74, which is through its first target at 4137.37. Targets 2 and 3 at 4118.52 and 4099.66.
H1. Sell at 4147.31 at 05:00, risk 28.99 points. Targets at 4118.32, 4089.34 and 4060.35.
Now put all four side by side, oldest first.
| Chart | Taken | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| H4 | Monday 08:00 | 80.79 |
| H1 | Today 05:00 | 28.99 |
| M30 | Today 04:00 | 18.86 |
| M15 | Today 03:30 | 9.36 |
The same market, the same direction, and the risk required to hold the position has fallen by almost 90 percent from the widest to the tightest.
Stop distance is not a setting. It is a measurement of where the chart invalidates the idea. On Monday that measurement was 80 points wide. This morning, on the shorter charts, it was nine.
What the tool does for you here: every ticket arrives with its own stop, measured on its own chart, in points. You never pick a stop distance out of the air and you never use the same one twice because it worked last week.
4. The Part That Actually Protects You

Lot size. This is the only line of defence that works on a trade that goes wrong, and gold punishes people who get it wrong because the contract is large.
One standard lot of gold is one hundred ounces. A one dollar move is one hundred dollars. On the minimum 0.01 lots, a one dollar move is one dollar.
So the formula is simple.
Lot size = risk in money divided by (stop distance times 100)
Take a ten thousand dollar account with a half percent limit, which is fifty dollars.
| Chart | Risk | Lot size | Money at risk | Percent of account |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M15 | 9.36 | 0.05 | $46.80 | 0.47% |
| M30 | 18.86 | 0.02 | $37.72 | 0.38% |
| H1 | 28.99 | 0.01 | $28.99 | 0.29% |
| H4 | 80.79 | 0.01 minimum | $80.79 | 0.81% |
Look at the bottom row.
On the four hour, the minimum tradeable lot size already breaks the half percent limit. There is no smaller position available. A ten thousand dollar account cannot take that trade at half a percent. It can only take it at 0.81 percent and pretend, or not take it.
Here is the same thing stated as account size. To risk half a percent at the minimum 0.01 lots, you need:
| Chart | Risk | Account needed |
|---|---|---|
| M15 | 9.36 | $1,872 |
| M30 | 18.86 | $3,772 |
| H1 | 28.99 | $5,798 |
| H4 | 80.79 | $16,158 |
Monday’s four hour trade was a sixteen thousand dollar account’s trade. Taken on a smaller account it is an over sized position with a respectable looking stop attached.
And then it lost. It lost 44.18 points instead of 80.79, which helped. But the trader who sized it as though it were a nine point stop would have been hurt regardless of how well the trailing worked.
The stop distance tells you the lot size. The lot size decides whether a loss is an event or a problem. That order never reverses.
5. The Honest Part About Trailing Stops
A trailing stop does not only reduce losses. It also closes trades that would have come back.
That is not a flaw to hide, it is the trade you are making. You accept being taken out earlier in exchange for the worst case shrinking every day the position is held.
Two things from today’s charts make the mechanism clear.
It follows the chart, not your profit. The fifteen minute ticket has reached two targets and is almost 20 points in front, yet its trailing stop sits at 4168.05, still above its own 4160.19 entry. The trail has moved 1.50 points while price moved 20. It tracks structure, which has not tightened yet, rather than how far ahead you happen to be.
Which is exactly why the four hour saved 36 points and not 80. Over two days the four hour structure tightened enough to pull the level from 4212.17 to 4175.56. No further. Price came back and took it there.
So this is not a trade that was rescued. It is a trade that failed for a little over half of what it was risking.
Where The Levels Sit Now
With gold at 4140.20:
M15 Target 3 at 4132.12 is 8.08 below, the nearest level on the board, with two targets already reached behind it.
M30 Target 2 at 4118.52 is 21.68 below, and its first target has already been passed.
H1 Target 1 at 4118.32 sits almost on top of that M30 level, so if price reaches one it is close to reaching the other.
Above price, the M15 trailing stop at 4168.05 is the first level, then the M30 stop at 4175.09 and the H1 stop at 4176.30 within a point of each other. That cluster is the floor under all three open tickets.
Those are the levels on the chart and how far price sits from each. None of it is a forecast.
What You Are Actually Buying
Direction, settled once. The daily and the four hour decide it and no shorter chart overrules them. A rally that has not broken structure took out a position today without earning a single buy ticket. That is what kept the new entries on the right side.
A stop distance measured on every chart, every time. Nine points on one timeframe and eighty on another, in the same market, on the same morning. You cannot guess that and you should not reuse last week’s number.
A trailing stop level that is recalculated as structure tightens, with the label changing from STOP LOSS to TRAILING STOP so you can see it has started. Today that was the difference between 80.79 and 44.18 on a trade that reached nothing. You still move the order on your platform yourself. The indicator does the arithmetic, the click is yours.
And the lot size that falls out of all of it, which is the only thing standing between a wrong trade and a bad week.

Gold Today: Common Questions
Is gold a buy or a sell today?
On 7 October 2026 the Direction Sniper panel reads SELL on gold. The daily and the four hour both point down, which sets the verdict, and this morning the fifteen minute, thirty minute and one hour all point down as well. Three sell tickets are open on the shorter charts and the four hour position has closed. This describes what the indicator displays and is not a recommendation to trade.
Does a trailing stop actually reduce your loss?
On this one trade it did, and the arithmetic is public. The gold four hour ticket entered at 4131.38 on 5 October with its stop at 4212.17, which is 80.79 points of risk. It closed this morning at its trailing stop of 4175.56, so it cost 44.18 points. The trade reached none of its three targets and still failed for 45 percent less than the risk it was taken with. The other side of that trade is real too, because trailing also closes positions that might later have recovered.
Why did the gold four hour trade close today?
Because price rose back through the level the trailing stop had reached. It was a sell from 4131.38 and over two days price went up instead of down. The stop had walked from 4212.17 down to 4175.56 as four hour structure tightened, and price came back for it there rather than at the original level. No target was reached at any point.
What are the gold key levels today?
With gold at 4140.20, the nearest level below is the M15 target three at 4132.12, then the H1 target one at 4118.32 and the M30 target two at 4118.52 almost on top of each other. Above price, the M15 trailing stop at 4168.05 comes first, then the M30 stop at 4175.09 and the H1 stop at 4176.30 within a point of each other.
Why are today’s gold stops so much tighter than Monday’s?
Because a stop distance is a measurement of the chart rather than a setting you choose. Monday’s four hour ticket needed 80.79 points. This morning the one hour needed 28.99, the thirty minute 18.86 and the fifteen minute 9.36. Same market, same direction, and the risk required to hold the position fell by almost 90 percent from the widest chart to the tightest, because structure had tightened.
What lot size should you use on gold today?
One standard lot of gold is one hundred ounces, so a one dollar move is one hundred dollars and the calculation is your risk in money divided by the stop distance multiplied by one hundred. On a ten thousand dollar account with a half percent limit of fifty dollars, today’s fifteen minute stop of 9.36 allows about 0.05 lots, the thirty minute stop of 18.86 allows 0.02 and the one hour stop of 28.99 allows 0.01. Monday’s four hour stop of 80.79 does not fit at all, because the minimum 0.01 lots already risks $80.79, which is 0.81 percent.
If Direction Sniper calculates the trailing stop, what is left for you to do?
The click. The indicator works out where the level should now sit, updates it as price moves and changes its label from STOP LOSS to TRAILING STOP once trailing has started, but it does not touch your order. You still adjust the stop on your platform yourself. That matters because a level shown on the chart and not acted on protects nothing, and the position is still carrying whatever stop the order actually holds.
Trading foreign exchange, gold and other leveraged products carries a high level of risk and is not suitable for everyone. The levels above describe where the indicator placed entries, stops and targets at the time the charts were read. The four hour position described is closed. The fifteen minute, thirty minute and one hour positions were still open, so their outcomes are not known. A stop is a level rather than a guarantee, and gaps or fast markets can fill you past it. Trailing a stop reduces the worst case on a position but also closes positions that may later have recovered. Lot sizing figures are arithmetic for illustration and are not a recommendation about how much anyone should trade, and contract sizes vary by broker, so check your own contract specifications. Nothing here is financial advice. Past performance does not guarantee future results.
